Pods come in two sizes and the difference in how long they run is bigger than the puff numbers alone suggest. Here are the real figures and how many you need to order.
The two pod sizes
The 6,000 puff pod holds 16 mL. The 10,000 puff pod holds 20 mL. Both fit the same Bar Plus S3 body, so you can mix and match freely depending on flavour availability.
Note that the liquid difference is 25 percent while the puff difference is 67 percent. The larger pod is rated more optimistically, so treat the millilitres as the more honest comparison.
How long each pod runs
At 250 puffs a day, a light rate, a 16 mL pod runs about three weeks and a 20 mL pod around a month.
At 400 puffs a day, which is typical, the 16 mL pod runs about two weeks and the 20 mL pod around three and a half.
At 700 puffs a day the 16 mL pod is gone inside nine days and the 20 mL in about a fortnight.
How many pods to order
Work out your daily rate, then order a month at a time. For most people that is two of the 16 mL pods or one to two of the 20 mL. Ordering in threes or in a ten pack drops the price per pod, and pods store well for months if you keep them upright and out of the heat.
Keeping one spare beyond your monthly need is worth doing. A pod that fails early leaves you with a body and nothing to put on it.
What makes a pod die early
The most common cause is not priming it. A fresh pod needs a minute or two standing upright for the cotton to absorb liquid, then two gentle draws before a normal one. A hard first pull on dry cotton scorches the coil permanently and the pod is finished before it started.
The second cause is sweet flavours. Dessert and candy liquids leave residue on the coil faster than clean fruit or ice, so expect a slightly shorter useful life from those.
The third is heat. A pod that has cooked in a car leaks and stales, and no amount of care afterwards recovers it.
Knowing when it is done
The flavour flattens first, then the vapour thins, then you get a burnt note. That last one is the end. If you catch it at the flattening stage, you can swap the pod before you ever taste burnt cotton, which is one of the quiet advantages of the pod system over a sealed device.
